Fan-fiction and copyright: Diana's response

Check out Diana Gabaldon's response to some of the MANY comments posted on her blog in the last several days about the issue of fan-fiction in general, and OUTLANDER fan-fiction in particular. (In case you missed the original post, look here for the details.)

I love the idea that Lord John now has a blend of Earl Grey tea named after him. <g> Those of you who've read AN ECHO IN THE BONE may recall a brief reference to a Major General Lord Charles Grey, who is described as a distant relation of Lord John's. This Lord Charles Grey was a real historical figure, and in fact, according to Wikipedia, his son was the Earl Grey for whom the tea is named. <g>

Dear Karen,

Thank you so much for that information. I didn't make the connections to Charles Grey.

And that his son became Prime Minister (1830-34). And his history was indeed interesting:

- 1832 the Redform Act that abolished slavery in the british Empire

- had 16 children with his wife

- had affairs, the most notable with the Duchess of Devonshire, Georgiana Cavendish, and it is also portrayed in the 2008 movie Duchess featuring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes. Charles Grey's role is played by Dominic Cooper. That is surely on my TBW list now.

- he has a daughter, Eliza Courtney with Georgiana and the girl was raised in the Grey family by her grandparents believing to be the sister of her actual father. Only after Georgiana died, Eliza was told the truth of her mother. The wikipedia page has two of Georgiana's poems to her daughter she only could follow from a distance. They will take your breath away.

You did make my day, Karen. <VBS>
